This project explores how architecture can mitigate the growing phenomenon of loneliness among Japan’s aging population. Drawing inspiration from Tokyo’s dense network of konbini (convenience stores) as highly accessible and familiar urban anchors, the project proposes a distributed system of “Community Nodes.” These consist of a central hub and a network of smaller satellite buildings strategically located across the city. Each node follows a recognizable architectural framework while offering adaptable, multi-use spaces for intergenerational learning, shared cooking, cultural exchange, and spontaneous encounters. By embedding these spaces into the everyday urban fabric and ensuring low-threshold accessibility, the Konbini+ aims to create a new social infrastructure that addresses isolation and fosters a renewed rhythm of community life in Tokyo—mirroring the ubiquity and approachability of the konbini itself.
